Module 02 · Lesson 6

Charting relationships

Positioning maps look like answers but they're really a way of arguing in public. In this lesson Elena walks through a live teardown of two failed positioning maps and shows how a plain two-axis chart beats a quadrant with aspirational labels every time.

Key takeaway
If your chart needs a legend to explain it, the chart is wrong. Simplify axes until the argument survives without help.

Worth saying clearly: a positioning map is a decision tool, not a poster. If nobody will act differently because of it, delete it.

Tried this on our roadmap review yesterday. Cut a whole axis and the argument got clearer in one pass.

We rebranded ours as a table, not a chart. Two columns, named filters. Nobody has asked for the quadrant since.
